Fears about rise in Adult Education Fees
July 26th 2007

The news that adult education fees are to rise steeply in the East Riding will come as a blow to many people said Cllr. Katrin McClure, Liberal Democrat spokesperson on education.

Speaking after the East Riding Cabinet meeting on Tuesday Cllr. McClure said “The removal of the concessionary fees for over 60 year olds and the general rise in fees is bound to discourage people from coming to adult education classes. Any drop in numbers will lead to closure of some classes and cut the number of opportunities for forming the social relationships that are so important to the quality of life, particularly for the older members of the community

Cllr. Carole Lynn, who attended the cabinet meeting, said “it is clear that the removal of concessionary fees, to fulfil the government’s equality agenda, over a relatively short time span, will have unintended consequences for those for whom the classes are an important part of their lives. I cannot believe that this Labour government has thought through the effects of such a steep rise in fees, especially on vulnerable people”
