ERYC Failing Hornsea Shopkeepers
March 5th 2007

Shopkeepers, their customers and residents of The Greenway in Hornsea are petitioning East Riding of Yorkshire Council after longstanding problems with car parking have been made worse since posts were erected last year by the council. Shopkeeper Jean Bolhunowskyj says her takings have fallen dramatically since the posts were erected.

ERYC Cllr Polly Worsdale says “The council simply made matters worse by putting up these posts round the grass on the Greenway. It was a short-term fix instead of a long-term solution, and it has just exacerbated the traffic and car parking problems here, as it was obviously going to do. It is not fair to the shopkeepers, nor to the residents, because these shops provide a valuable service to people who live on the estate and in fact from all over Hornsea. We need more parking spaces and they could also be time-limited, to get a good turnover of cars and so help the shopkeepers. I often use the post office for example because it stays open late two days a week, and Geoff’s fish and chips are renowned. Short-term thinking by ERYC means we are at risk of losing some of these shops. I totally support the businesses and their customers and will be helping them to present the petition to the relevant overview and scrutiny committee.”
