Clegg Shines in Second PM Debate

The public's reaction to the second prime ministerial debate showed that Nick Clegg and David Cameron are running neck-and-neck, despite attempts by some sections of the press to smear Nick Clegg in the run-up to the debate.

East Riding Lib Dem Councillor, Carole Lynn, said, "the reaction of voters to the idea of a "hung" or "balanced" parliament is very different from that for any previous election. It is clear that the Tories have not made enough headway to form the next government and there are signs that they are becoming increasingly worried.

With the country only just emerging from economic recession, with recent sleaze stories about former Labour MPs, with the country having been in a state of war for much of Labour's term of office and with the country being led by an unpopular Prime Minister, who was not elected to that office - the Tories would have expected to have been well ahead in the opinion polls.  But they are not.

Whilst the opinion poll figures mean that Nick Clegg has succeeded against the odds, they also mean that David Cameron has failed to capture the public's confidence."
